Black Cats are
Good Luck
story contest

October Issues Only

Open Aug 1 - Sept 2

We strive to provide quality stories and opportunities for animal lovers and to change the perspectives of misunderstood animals. Even now, black cats are still among the most abused animals and difficult pets to adopt. As animal advocates, we hope to contribute to changing the narrative for these animals. We're also slightly biased -- our EIC has two black cats (Liam here and Oliver below) and has loved the breed for years.

Like with general submissions, we are not looking for stories simply about beloved black cats, but stories of reflection,  changed lives or mindsets, and the cats who brought blessings into human lives.

The winning story will have guaranteed acceptance in the upcoming October issue, and the author will receive the $150 grand prize.

The contest is open during the reading periods for every October issue. Any pieces sent before will not be considered until submissions open. Check our Submit page for more guidelines.

We will only consider fiction and nonfiction stories up to 2,000 words in a 12-point font, double-spaced Microsoft Word document. Contestants may submit one story to the contest as well as one piece to general submissions, but if the contest story wins, we will not consider any other submissions. The contest fee is $2.

We will not accept pieces that condone violence or animal abuse or contain profanity, erotica, or dark themes.
