Aureate Prize Winner

'Honey bear' draws its inspiration from bears being beloved animals of mine, the melancholia of their habitats around the world being so invaded, depleted and ruined by humans is what inspired the piece to be done in grungy watercolours. 'Kitsune' is an exploration of Japanese mythology archetype, kitsune, which is a shapeshifting fox, through double exposure photography and digital collating.

My world-view on art is that it should be explored, and together with it, the world itself. I think creating something, inspired by art, and vice-versa being inspired into creating art, is an enriching experience that everyone should have a chance to go at.

Each of the two composite images was created by merging three of my photographs and edited to emphasize colour, movement and composition; I do not use AI-image generators. Pausing Chaos and Shimmering Spirit encourage contemplation on the value, beauty and behaviour of Great Blue Herons and Bald Eagles by transporting them in familiar poses from common, natural environments to surreal, intriguing settings.

As an artist, my worldview is that humans are not separate from nature, but intrinsically woven into interconnected, interdependent and indispensable ecosystems.
