Who We Are

We are a team of writers and artists who love animals, beautiful words, and art that is full of life.

Volunteers can work as much or as little as they like. There are no minimum hours or workloads -- if you can only read one piece each reading period or post once a week to our social media profiles, that is completely fine. The only things we require are for you to be a consistent communicator and to meet deadlines.

As a thank you for joining our team, we will send you free PDFs of the upcoming magazine.

Reader positions are open for Honeyguide and Parakeet. The Writer Liaison and Social Media Manager positions are open for all magazines (Honeyguide, Parakeet, and The Field Guide).

To apply, please read the requirements for your desired position below. Then, click the button below to fill out the application. We will contact you for an interview within a week of receiving your application.

If you do not hear from us within a week of applying, you are welcome to send us an email at info@honeyguidemag.com.

We look forward to working with you!

Correspondents

We need correspondents to help us stay organized, answer emails more quickly and keep contributors in the loop.

Expectations:

  • Be professional, courteous, and kind. Correspondents should always use respectful language and never harass or degrade contributors, followers, supporters, or team members.

  • Communicate with contributors to collect social media handles or missing bios, email PDFs, and notify of any news and updates.

  • Proofread their own work before sending emails.

Responsibilities:

  • Organize social media handles in a Sheets doc or email to an editor.

  • Notify contributors of PDF updates or publishing news, and email updated PDFs.

  • Double-check accepted submissions to make sure they contain bios that are the desired length and are written in the third person, and ask contributors to edit bios to meet this criterion if needed.

  • Generally, the correspondent will only work from the last week of a reading period to the publication date.

Readers

We need readers to help us give each submission the attention it deserves and to respond to contributors in a timely manner.

Expectations:

  • Be professional, courteous, and kind. No reader should be posting submission excerpts or derogatory comments about submissions or contributors.

  • Read each assigned story, poem, article, or blog post in completion and send the appropriate editor notes about the piece.

Responsibilities:

  • Submissions can be between 1-10 pages and need to be completed within a week.

  • You can take on as many or as few submissions each week, just please let us know if you cannot read one week or need a lighter load.

Proofreaders

We need proofreaders to review content before it's published, both online and in print. The content includes magazine and blog contributions, and website information.

Expectations:

  • Be professional, courteous, and kind. No reader should be posting submission excerpts or derogatory comments about submissions or contributors.

  • Be knowledgeable in the rules of standard English grammar and clear, concise writing.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare written pieces for publication, checking for grammatical and spelling errors and overall quality, and tracking changes (if needed). This includes newsletters, blog posts, and website and magazine content.

  • Work as needed throughout the month and 2 weeks before magazine publication. We would need pieces to be completed within a week, if not less.

Social Media Manager

We need someone to manage our social media pages, grow our audience and engage with followers.

Expectations:

  • Be professional, courteous, and kind. Social media managers should always use respectful language and never harass or degrade contributors, followers, supporters, or staff members.

  • Post relevant content consistently and engage with followers.

  • Use correct grammar and clear, concise language.

Responsibilities:

  • Post to our Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram accounts, interact with followers, and engage with our target audience. We mainly need help in chatting with others online.

  • You may post or chat as often or little as you like and working every day is not required, just please be very clear about what you can and cannot do.
